How many times have you told yourself something was impossible? Over the last few months, we’ve seen so many restrictions on where we go, what we do, and who we see that it may feel like our entire world is made of impossibilities. With the arrival of Virgo Season, our focus is on practicalities – the passion and freedom of Leo begin to cool as we return to the fertile soil of our new stars. Our mind naturally begins to prepare for the changes ahead. Virgo occupies a unique place in the zodiac; it’s a place of transition, representing the final stages of self-development where we must turn inwards. It’s the place where we prepare our individual soul to meet another, the last moments of pure selfhood and individuation. Once we cross the threshold into Libra, we are part of a collective: in Virgo, we are truly ourselves.
Virgo represents all the potential of the evolved self, but after the journey of 2020, it’s natural that we’ve internalized so many fears and limiting beliefs. Embodying our highest self feels impossible when we still need to construct new support systems and seek out sustainable ways to tend to our most basic needs. Astrological transits are rarely as literal as they have been this year, and Uranus in Taurus has made us rethink the ways we care for ourselves – we’ve experienced scarcity of money, food, and even shelter during its time in the sign, but it’s also given us an opportunity to redefine abundance and get clear on our priorities. It’s with these new definitions in mind that we put our feet back on the ground and work towards organizing the information we have.
Full Moon in Pisces
On September 2nd, the Full Moon in Pisces arrives to strengthen our understanding of our own potential. A Full Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon are in perfect opposition, a valuable opportunity to see where your heart may be out of alignment with the world around you. During the Pisces Full Moon, we long for connectivity, to merge ourselves with the greater whole, to explore the depths of the collective soul, and return to spirit. Dreams are intense, signs are everywhere, and yet…it just doesn’t feel like there’s time to do any of it with Virgo Season’s strict schedules and rigorous performance standards. But Uranus isn’t done shaking things up; the King of High Weirdness makes helpful aspects to both the Sun and Moon, keeping things just erratic enough to stay flexible. During this lunation, impermanence becomes our greatest strength. Mars in Aries, Self-Advocate Warrior, pulls the bow tense between Venus and Saturn, indicating that the step we take now to fight for a better life could make significant headway in the war between our individual values and the larger social structures. Experiment, play and be rewarded. Use this Full Moon to release limiting thoughts and behaviors, especially those acquired through indoctrination and habit. Remove impossibility from your vocabulary and see what it does to your potential.
As the Moon begins to wane, so too does the grip of the past; on September 5th Mercury slips into Libra just hours before Venus moves into Leo, each giving us a rare opportunity to see through illusion and falsehood with courage and grace. These are exactly the qualities we’ll need as Mars stations retrograde, a position we see only once every 26 months. This means that Mars remains in Aries for a little over six months, asking us to take a good hard look at how we act for ourselves through advocacy and acquisition. In addition to motivation and drive, Mars also rules desire: what desires have you denied because they seem impossible? What have you refused to even dream of for fear of disappointment? Mars stations at 28 Degrees of Aries, one described by some astrologers as a place where light and dark exist in harmony. The shadows we’ve hidden within our subconscious depths must be pulled up “playfully or mischievously” in order to progress. Use the retrograde as a chance to embrace playfulness: invite your inner child to the surface and put the Virgo love of service to use by nurturing self-discovery and innocence. Mars retrograde often feels like a sand trap, but we have the chance to turn it into the sandbox of our dreams.
Jupiter goes direct
We’ll have some help with our Mars Mission of desire from Jupiter, which stations direct on the 12th. Jupiter spent the last few months tangling with Saturn and Pluto, both currently skulking through Capricorn, exposing long-hidden secrets of the establishment left and right. Now direct, there’s a renewed intensity surrounding our personal vision and the pursuit thereof. As Jupiter transits the remaining degrees of Capricorn, we are no longer content with the scraps of our dreams. While Mars retrograde allows us to face the fears that have kept us small, Jupiter expands our sense of self and tells us that we deserve more. This is the intensity of focus that can help us crystalize the plans we make when the Moon is New in Virgo.
New Moon in Virgo
New Moons are a blank slate. Our body and soul are fully aligned and we plant the seeds of our will. And after the cosmic harvest of these two weeks, there will be plenty of seeds to be sown. Virgo is ruled by Mercury and has a penchant for carefully chosen words and communications: the New Moon in Virgo is an excellent time to sit down and journal your plans for the season ahead, create stories that show the miraculous manifestations you’re about to bring in, and chart the synchronicities you’ve experienced during this time. Once it’s on paper, give yourself permission to release it from your mind–Virgo season can be tough for anxiety, and we all know a watched pot never boils. It may be hard, but doing the work of manifestation is more important than obsessive thought. Put your faith in the universe and keep your nose to the ground.
If you’re worried about the oh-so-Virgo practicalities, don’t be: on September 20th the season’s ruler, Mercury, squares off with Shadow King Pluto. Change is in the air, and this aspect can bring new winds to help blow away the obstacles we’ve faced along the way. If you’ve avoided facing any unpleasant truths, internal or external, now’s the time to look once and for all. Take a deep breath and find peace in your own quiet power. Remember – nothing is impossible.
